If bone marrow transplantation is envisaged, the physician should first try to find a compatible donor among the patient's siblings. If no such donor exists, the physician should contact France Greffe de Moelle, the French register of volunteers for bone marrow donation, to find a donor with genetic compatibility (HLA system) as close as possible to that of the recipient. The probability of compatibility may reach 30% for a brother or sister, but is only 1 in a million for two individuals selected at random.

We therefore need to develop the register of volunteer bone marrow donors, by increasing both the total number of potential donors and their genetic diversity.

18,000 new volunteer bone marrow donors per year

Since 2004, the Agence de la biomédecine has been carrying out actions in the framework of the "transplantation" plan launched in 2000, with the aim of recruiting 18,000 new bone marrow donors per year, over 10 years. This recruitment programme today aims to improve the French register both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Created in 1985, the French Volunteer Bone Marrow Donors Register, known as France Greffe de Moelle, makes use of a secure computer network to centralise all the characteristics of potential donors registered by French donation centres.

This register belongs to the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), a worldwide communication network guaranteeing the quality and transparency of national registers, and currently includes almost 140,000 donors.
